National Statistics

  • 18% of females nationally experience rape or attempted rape at sometime in their lifetime.
  • 3% of males nationally experience rape or attempted rape in their lifetime.
  • 16% of rape survivors report the crime to law enforcement.

New Mexico Statistics

  • 1 in 4 females will experience rape or attempted rape in their lifetime.
  • 1 in 20 males will experience rape or attempted rape in their lifetime.
  • 1 in 6 males will experience some form of sexual violence in their lifetime.

In 2006:

  • 82% of survivors knew their perpetrator prior to the assault.
  • 97% of child rapes were perpetrated by someone known to the child.
  • 90% of adolescent rapes were perpetrated by someone known to the adolescent.
  • 38% of sexual offenses were committed in the survivors home, 24% in the offender's home, and 11% occurred in another private residence.
  • 34% of sex crimes that were reported to service providers were also reported to the police.
