Perpetrators of Sexual Violence: Statistics

Understanding sexual violence and its effects on our communities means understanding who is perpetrating sexual violence in our communities. Below are some statistics around perpetrators of sexual violence in the state of New Mexico.

 

Perpetrator Relationship to the Survivor

The majority of perpetrators of sexual violence in New Mexico (87%) are known by their survivor(s) compared to those who reported their perpeatrator as a stranger (13%). 1

 

 

Age of Perpetrators

The majority of perpetrators of sexual violence in New Mexico are adults who are 18 years or older (78%), whereas adolescents, between ages 12 and 18 years old, make up less than a quarter of perpetrators (20%).1

 Of sexual assaults that were reported to service providers in New Mexico, nearly a quarter were white (23%), more than half were Hispanic (54%), nearly a sixth were Native American (16%), and less than a tenth were either Black, Asian, or Multiracial (6%). 1
